


Reducing our footprint
Do you think procurement is all about numbers? Here is one: about 80-90% of sales in the feed industry is based on purchased ingredients. So if you like procurement, the feed industry is an excellent workplace where procurement is core to the company. To list another number, 96% of the carbon footprint of Nutreco comes from purchased raw materials. That’s why procurement at Nutreco is not a staff department but the very basis of our primary process: procurement, formulation, sales, and operations.
With over 1.000 ingredients currently in our global portfolio, we see that thoughtful sourcing is of fundamental importance to our business moving forward, not only from a practical but also a sustainability perspective. That means buying other raw materials which have less climate impact. Buying fish feed that has been certified. Using science-based targets to improve our business. And – of course – always balancing between sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
ONE procurement, three expertise areas
For a long time, both Trouw Nutrition and Skretting had their own purchasing department. Recently we’ve transformed this into ONE procurement, where we focus on three different areas of expertise:
- Macro: think grains, soy, fishmeal. We buy these in very large volumes, all around the globe.
- Micro: think vitamins, minerals, amino acids. These have smaller volumes but a much higher value.
- Indirect: think office supplies, IT hardware, lease cars. With over 12.000 employees worldwide, you can imagine this being just as challenging.
With locations from northern Norway to southern Chile, Nutreco is a truly global company.
