Quality Assurance Supervisor Skretting Japan

During International Day for Women and Girls in Science, we’re talking to
some of the inspiring women scientists who are making their marks at Nutreco. Sana Furusawa, who works at Skretting Japan, talks about what – and who – inspires her and makes her proud as Quality Assurance Supervisory within our aquaculture business line.

What inspired you to pursue a career in science?
I started my career in supply chain management, and later transitioned to quality control. Currently, I am responsible for Quality Assurance.

Quality plays a pivotal role in the entire business, and I take pride in contributing to this crucial aspect of our operations.

I am inspired by the fact that many women are actively contributing to and excelling in our global team. That has motivated me to pursue a career in quality-related fields.

Can you share a moment in your career that made you feel especially proud?
I led a project to introduce a quality-related system in the plant and successfully implemented it.

How do you hope your work will influence the scientific community and the animal protein production in the future?
Skretting provides not only the feed production but also fish quality services, particularly in closed aquaculture systems (CAS), a concept that no competitors have considered in Japan. These systems are highly sustainable, lessening aquaculture’s need for water and space, and reducing food miles the fish has to travel to get to consumers. By helping develop CAS in Japan, we are helping address challenges like rising raw material costs and climate change and improve the profitability of our nation’s aquaculture industry.

Can you share a fun or surprising fact about your research or field of expertise?
It’s wonderful to be able to constantly explore new things and share information and knowledge with people from many different countries.
