The CAPEX HSE Engineer supports project team in integration of HSE requirements during the design (based on NIP’s Hazard Identification process), as well as conducting Process Hazard Analyses, HSE Design reviews and preparations for pre-startup safety reviews. These processes are part of NIP’s “Way We Work”. This role works closely with NIP Project Managers, who retain ultimate responsibility for successful project delivery, but operate in the NIP “Way We Work” framework. Jointly with the project team, this role also works closely with Global HSE Team, external consultants & design companies as well as with business stakeholders involved in project design development. This role reports to NIP’s Best Practices Lead. 

 

This is a global role that will support NIP projects around the globe, which involves a reasonable amount of global travel (up to 25%). 

 

 

About The Role 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Jointly with the Project Manager, responsible for management of the NIP project HSE design checklist process and the NIP project Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) process, including communication between NIP project team, (HSE) stakeholders and relevant third parties in projects and administration. This role pro-actively engages Project Managers and initiates and organizes relevant HSE activities 

  • Supporting project teams in ensuring projects comply with relevant EU Directives or equivalent regulatory requirements. For these activities, usually local external experts are involved. This role works directly with these third parties in aligning on & reviewing of designs, aimed at achieving compliance 

  • Supporting NIP PM’s in identification of hazards and applicable legal/Nutreco requirements (HAZID) and definition of requirements for the design (Basis of Design). Leading discussions with Global HSE and documenting the HSE compliance related project scope for brownfield integration. 

 

Skills and Expertise  

 

Qualifications:  

  • At least  5 years hands-on experience with process safety and occupational Health & Safety within within production environment - preferably in animal/aquafeed, food, FMCG or fine chemicals. Understanding of challenges with CAPEX projects delivery in ongoing production.  

  • Demonstrated experience in application of international design codes, Process hazard analysis (HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA etc.), Machinery safety, explosion safety (ATEX or NFPA) 

  • Demonstrated experience with environmental impact topics (site surveys, emissions control, environmental impact assessments, etc) 

  • Ability to read design documentation (experience with multiple standards preferred).  

  • Fluent in English (verbal and writing). Spanish or Dutch is highly desirable. 

 

Expectation from Role 

  •  Leads discussions with Global/BU HSE in cases where compliance with Nutreco HSE standards is not feasible, in order to come to agreement with Global HSE on a solution. This also includes proposing alternative solutions. This role acts as the contact for Global HSE for NIP CAPEX project matters 
  • Supporting NIP PM’s in conducting Process Hazard Analysis during planning and design to ensure completeness of project scope definition. Transfer of design input from HAZID/PHA to IT/OT(Industrial Automation) discipline. Support during execution to validate engineering solutions and close-out of PHA actions 

  • Responsible for monitoring and documenting compliance with Nutreco HSE standards in NIP projects. NIP HSE Engineer works closely with NIP PM who remains responsible for compliance in NIP projects.
