Specialist Cell biologist for cell feed

Job Description

Specialist Cell Biologist - Cell Feed

Temporary assignment

Stavanger, Norway

Join us in shaping the future of sustainable food production

At Nutreco, we are driven by a clear purpose: Feeding the Future. As the global population continues to grow, new and emerging protein production methods will play an important role alongside traditional farming. Through our Cell Feed initiative, we partner with cultivated protein companies to develop sustainable inputs for the emerging cellular agriculture industry.

As a Specialist Cell Biologist for Cell Feed, you will contribute to our purpose of Feeding the Future by advancing cell culture media development for the cultivated protein industry. Joining our Biotechnology team on a long term temporary assignment, you will work in a small, entrepreneurial environment focused on developing innovative cell feed solutions and strengthening our research capabilities.

In this hands-on role, you will develop and test cell culture media, implement new methodologies, and support the continuous development of our cell culture laboratory capabilities. You will collaborate closely with internal colleagues and external partners and work primarily from our research centre, the Skretting Bubble, as part of Skretting's Biotechnology team and Nutreco's broader Cell Feed initiative.

This position is located in Stavanger, Norway.

Key responsibilities

  • Set up, maintain, and apply 2D and 3D cell culture models.
  • Develop and optimize tailor-made cell culture media for different cell types.
  • Test premixes and functional ingredients across relevant cell models.
  • Plan and conduct cell nutrition research and interpret experimental outcomes.
  • Independently plan, prioritize, execute, troubleshoot, and document experiments.
  • Develop, optimize, and implement new laboratory methods and techniques.
  • Generate high-quality data and communicate results to project managers and other stakeholders.
  • Support the day-to-day operation and continuous improvement of the cell culture laboratory, including routines, equipment, consumables, documentation, and organization.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary internal teams and external industry partners.
  • Present scientific work to technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications and experience

  • MSc or PhD in Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, including 2D and 3D models, stem cell culture, and sterile laboratory work using aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of cell culture media development, optimization, and cell nutrition research.
  • Strong scientific mindset with experience in experimental design, statistics, data analysis, and the ability to independently design, execute, troubleshoot, and interpret experiments.
  • Experience developing, optimizing, and implementing laboratory methods and techniques relevant to cell-based research and development.
  • Experience from a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or other R&D environment.
  • Strong communication skills with experience presenting scientific findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working in a quality-focused laboratory environment with strong documentation practices; experience managing and maintaining a cell culture laboratory is an advantage.
  • Experience with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is considered an advantage

What we are looking for

You are a proactive, self-driven, and solution-oriented professional with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. You take ownership of your work, are comfortable working independently, and approach tasks in a structured and detail-oriented manner. You thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments and build strong relationships with both internal colleagues and external partners. In addition, you communicate clearly, present complex information effectively, and have professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
